View from the Music Farm, looking towards Dent Fell
Western Lakeland is a land of vivid and exciting contrasts, lying between the mountains and
the sea. The coastal towns are within minutes of complete peace and tranquility. Whitehaven is
the main administrative centre for Copeland Borough Council, who administer the area.
There are four main valleys, each with their own distinct character, leading from the coast
into the heart of the Lake District: Ennerdale, Eskdale, Wasdale and Dunnerdale. Wasdale is the
home of England's highest mountain Scafell Pike (3206 ft) and the deepest lake - Wastwater.

Egremont is a small market town, which has held a market charter since 1267. It has
a wide main street, overlooked by the remains of a Norman Castle.
|
|
Egremont Castle was built about 1130,
and stands on a mound above the River Ehen. The ditches are well preserved. Part
of the wall and the gatehouse are in a reasonable state of repair. The massive wall at the end
of the outer bailey was part of the Great Hall

Lowes Court Gallery shows a wide range of paintings,
prints and craft work. There are monthly exhibitions of new and established
artists.
The Gallery is also the Tourist Information Centre providing local
information and an accommodation booking service.
|
|
Just south of the town is Florence Mine, once the last working iron ore mine in Europe, and part of the rich mining
history of West Cumbria.
|
|
Some 4 miles from Egremont is the seaside village of St Bees, start of the Coast to Coast
Walk. St Bees Head, a red sandstone bluff, forms one of the most dramatic natural features
along the entire coast of North West England.

|
Ennerdale is the most westerly of the lakes, and the most remote, so it offers, even in high
season, a place to escape. It is a deep glacial lake, 2.5 miles long. The water is exceptionally
clear, and contains a variety of fish. It is the only lake that does not have a road running alongside it.
